COAL COMPANY TOWNS
IN EASTERN KENTUCKY, 1854-1941

ABSTRACT

    This report Contains findings of a literature Survey and reconnaissance field Survey in die Eastern Kentucky Coal Field concerning historic company-owned coal towns. The literature Survey involved primary documents published by State and federal governments; Secondary Sources included historic Overviews on the Subject.

    Literature survey resulted in a historic context, Coal Mining in Eastern Kentucky, 1790-1940, for which the property type, Coal Company Towns, was initiated In the historic context, three periods of coal mining are identified: 1790-1865, 1865-1900, 1900-1940.

     Based on reconnaissance survey, the report identifies places in the survey area which have higher potential to contain relevant resources. The study recommends relevant issues in the methodology for intensive level investigation of company towns. Recommendations for further survey work and overall preservation goals are offered.
